A compilation of writings alluding to one who betrays the cause of God (a divine test for Baha'is).
As shown in over 50 examples on the main page, Shoghi Effendi contradicts many fundamental teachings of Baha'u'llah. As shown in Chapter 6, Shoghi Effendi appears to have interpolated the Holy Writings. As shown in Chapter 24, Shoghi Effendi does not
recognise Abdu'l-Baha's station as a Dependent Prophet ("Branch", "Moon", "Angel", "Cord of God", "Firm Handle", "Temple"), as a Manifestation of God (like Imam Ali in the era of
Muhammad).
Below are writings of Bahá’u’lláh and Abdu’l-Baha that allude to such
an event; a theme also found in passage 8 from the Quran. Those who
disregard the truths enshrined in the sacred verses of Bahá’u’lláh
(which Baha’is are required to study daily); and also disregard the
following warning in the Kitab-i-Aqdas, "But
he whose words conflict with that which hath been sent down in My Holy
Tablets is not of Me. Beware lest ye follow any impious pretender."; are not following the divine teachings.
1)
A twofold obligation resteth upon him who hath recognized the Day Spring of the Unity of God,
and acknowledged the truth of Him Who is the Manifestation of His
oneness. The first is steadfastness in His love, such steadfastness
that neither the clamor of the enemy nor the claims of the idle
pretender can deter him from cleaving unto Him Who is the Eternal
Truth, a steadfastness that taketh no account of them whatever. The
second is strict observance of the laws He hath prescribed -- laws
which He hath always ordained, and will continue to ordain, unto men,
and through which the truth may be distinguished and separated from
falsehood.
-- Baha'u'llah, Gleanings from the Writings of Baha'u'llah, p. 289
... Meditate profoundly, that the secret of things unseen may be
revealed unto you, that you may inhale the sweetness of a spiritual and
imperishable fragrance,
and that you may acknowledge the truth that from time immemorial even
unto eternity the Almighty hath tried, and will continue to try, His
servants, so that light may be distinguished from darkness, truth from
falsehood, right from wrong, guidance from error, happiness from
misery, and roses from thorns. Even as He hath revealed: "Do men think
when they say 'We believe' they shall be let alone and not be put to
proof?"[1]
[1 Qur'án 29:2.]
-- Baha'u'llah, The Kitab-i-Iqan, p. 7
2)
62. O SON OF DUST!
Turn not away thine eyes from the matchless wine of the immortal
Beloved, and open them not to foul and mortal dregs. Take from the
hands of the divine Cup-bearer the chalice of immortal life, that all
wisdom may be thine, and that thou mayest hearken unto the mystic voice
calling from the realm of the invisible. Cry aloud, ye that are of low
aim! Wherefore have ye turned away from My holy and immortal wine unto
evanescent water?
-- Baha'u'llah, The Persian Hidden Words
3)
The earth hath been shaken, and the mountains have passed away, and the angels [Dependent Prophets of Baha'u'llah] have appeared, rank on rank, before Us.
Most of the people are bewildered in their drunkenness and wear on
their faces the evidences of anger. Thus have We gathered together the
workers of iniquity. We see them rushing on towards their idol. Say:
None shall be secure this Day from the decree of God. This indeed is a
grievous Day. We point out to them those that led them astray. They see
them, and yet recognize them not. Their eyes are drunken; they are
indeed a blind people. Their proofs are the calumnies they uttered;
condemned are their calumnies by God, the Help in Peril, the
Self-Subsisting. The Evil One hath stirred up mischief in their hearts,
and they are afflicted with a torment that none can avert. They hasten
to the wicked, bearing the register of the workers of iniquity. Such
are their doings.
Say: The heavens have been folded together, and the earth is held within His grasp, and the
corrupt doers have been held by their forelock, and still they
understand not. They drink of the tainted water, and know it not.
Say: The shout hath been raised, and the people have come forth from
their graves, and arising, are gazing around them. Some have made haste
to attain the court of the God of Mercy, others have fallen down on
their faces in the fire of Hell, while still others are lost in
bewilderment. The verses of God have been revealed, and yet they have turned away from them. His proof hath been manifested, and yet they are unaware of it. And when they behold the face of the All-Merciful, their own faces are saddened, while they are disporting themselves. They hasten forward to Hell Fire, and mistake it for light. Far from God be what they fondly imagine!
Say: Whether ye rejoice or whether ye burst for fury, the heavens are
cleft asunder, and God hath come down, invested with radiant
sovereignty. All created things are heard exclaiming: "The Kingdom is
God's, the Almighty, the All-Knowing, the All-Wise."
-- Baha'u'llah, Gleanings from the Writings of Baha'u'llah, p. 40-42
4)
Since Thou hast purposed, O my God, to cause all created things to
enter into the tabernacle of Thy transcendent grace and favor, and to
waft over the entire creation the fragrances of the raiment of Thy
glorious unity, and to look upon all things with the eyes of Thy bounty
and Thy oneness, I beseech Thee, therefore, by Thy love, which Thou
hast made to be the mainspring of the revelations of Thine eternal
holiness, and the flame that gloweth within the hearts of such of Thy
creatures as yearn towards Thee, to create, this very moment, for those
of Thy people who are wholly devoted to Thee, and for such of Thy loved
ones as love Thee, out of the essence of Thy bounty and Thy generosity,
and from the inmost spirit of Thy grace and Thy glory, Thy Paradise of
transcendent holiness, and to exalt it above everything except Thee,
and to sanctify it from aught else save Thyself. Create, moreover,
within it, O my God, out of the lights shed by Thy throne, handmaidens
[Dependent Prophets of Baha'u'llah] who will intone the melodies of Thy wondrous and most sweet invention,
that they may magnify Thy name with such words as have not been heard
by any of Thy creatures, be they the inmates of Thy heaven or the
dwellers of Thine earth, nor been comprehended by any of Thy people.
Unlock, then, the gates of this Paradise to the faces of Thy loved
ones, that haply they may enter them in Thy name, and by the power of
Thy sovereignty, that thereby the sovereign bounties vouchsafed by Thee
unto Thy chosen ones [Dependent Prophets of Baha'u'llah] and the transcendent gifts granted unto Thy
trusted ones be perfected, that they may extol Thy virtues with such
melodies as none can either intone or describe, and that none of Thy
people may conceive the design of appearing in the guise of any of Thy
chosen ones, or of emulating the example of Thy loved ones, and that
none may fail to discern between Thy friends and Thine enemies, or to
distinguish them that are devoted to Thee from such as stubbornly
oppose Thee. Potent art Thou to do what Thou willest, and powerful and
supreme art Thou over all things.
-- Bahá'u'lláh, Prayers and Meditations, p. 326-327
5)
Then the gales of divine tests and the winds of lordly temptation blew
from the Sheba of the everlasting Cause. They became distracted by the
beauty of the wine server and grew heedless of the immortal
countenance, to the extent that they imagined the shadow to be the sun
and phantoms to be light. They set out for the ladders of the greatest
name so that they might scale those heavens and arrive at that seat and
place. When they rose toward it, the divine assayers [Dependent Prophets of Baha'u'llah] descended upon
them with the sacred touchstone, by the irresistible decree of the
lord. When these emissaries did not perceive the scent [fragrance] of the spiritual
youth [Baha'u'llah], they forbade entry to all...
... We have passed beyond the loftiness of abstraction, the sublimity
of divine oneness, the ultimate recognition that God is above all
attributes, and the most great sanctification. Now, they must put forth
their utmost effort and give their unswerving attention, so that their
inward secrets not be contrary to their overt behavior, nor their
outward deeds at variance with their inner mysteries. We have traversed
the stage of expending the self for others. Arise to expend justice and
fairness upon the souls that pertain to you.
In the end, however, you prefer the cloak of carnal longing and desire to the robe of divine benediction, and you
exchange the song of the nightingale of immortality for the
disagreeable croaking of death that issues from the throats of the
hateful and rebellious. How miserable a trade you make! We are from God and to him do we return. God willing, we maintain the hope that the immortal temples of glory shall,
through the adornment of holiness and the divine attributes, appear
illumined, gentle, pure and undefiled like the eternal sun. This is not
difficult for God.
-- Bahá'u'lláh, Tablet of the Holy Mariner from the Persian. (a provisional translation by Juan Cole)
6)
In the future untrue reports will be spread regarding Bahá'u'lláh in
order to hinder the spread of Truth. I tell you this, that you may be
awake and prepared.
-- Abdu'l-Baha, Abdu'l-Baha in London, p. 38
7)
Praise be unto God Who hath made the Most Great Infallibility
the shield for the temple of His Cause in the realm of creation, and
hath assigned unto no one a share of this lofty and sublime station --
a station which is a vesture which the fingers of transcendent power
have woven for His august Self. It befitteth no one except Him Who is
seated upon the mighty throne of 'He doeth what He pleaseth'. Whoso
accepteth and recognizeth that which is written down at this moment by
the Pen of Glory is indeed reckoned in the Book of God, the Lord of the
beginning and the end, among the exponents of divine unity, they that
uphold the concept of the oneness of God.
When the stream of words reached this stage, the sweet savours of true
knowledge were shed abroad and the day-star of divine unity shone forth
above the horizon of His holy utterance. Blessed is he whom His Call
hath attracted to the summit of glory, who hath drawn nigh to the
ultimate Purpose, and who hath recognized through the shrill voice of
My Pen of Glory that which the Lord of this world and of the next hath
willed. Whoso faileth to quaff
the choice wine which We have unsealed through the potency of Our Name,
the All-Compelling, shall be unable to discern the splendours of the
light of divine unity or to grasp the essential purpose underlying the
Scriptures of God, the Lord of heaven and earth, the sovereign Ruler of
this world and of the world to come. Such a man shall be accounted
among the faithless in the Book of God, the All-Knowing, the
All-Informed.
O thou honoured enquirer! We bear witness that thou didst firmly adhere
unto seemly patience during the days when the Pen was held back from
movement and the Tongue hesitated to set forth an explanation regarding
the wondrous sign, the Most Great Infallibility. Thou hast asked this
Wronged One to remove for thee its veils and coverings, to elucidate
its mystery and character, its state and position, its excellence,
sublimity and exaltation. By the life of God! Were We to unveil the
pearls of testimony which lie hid within the shells of the ocean of
knowledge and assurance or to let the beauties of divine mystery [the pre-existent Dependent Prophets of Baha'u'llah] which [who]
are hidden within the chambers of utterance in the Paradise of true
understanding, step out of their habitation, then from every direction
violent commotion would arise among the leaders of religion and thou
wouldst witness the people of God held fast in the teeth of such wolves
as have denied God both in the beginning and in the end. Therefore We
restrained the Pen for a considerable lapse of time in accordance with
divine wisdom and for the sake of protecting the faithful from those
who have bartered away heavenly blessings for disbelief and have chosen
for their people the abode of perdition.
O thou seeker who art gifted with keen insight. I swear by Him Who
attracted the Concourse on High through the potency of His most sublime
Word! Verily, the birds abiding within the domains of My Kingdom and
the doves dwelling in the rose-garden of My wisdom utter such melodies
and warblings as are inscrutable to all but God, the Lord of the
kingdoms of earth and heaven; and were these melodies to be revealed
even to an extent smaller than a needle's eye, the people of tyranny
would utter such calumnies as none among former generations hath ever
uttered, and would commit such deeds as no one in past ages and
centuries hath ever committed. They have rejected the bounty of God and
His proofs and have repudiated the testimony of God and His signs. They
have gone astray and have caused the people to go astray, yet perceive
it not. They worship vain imaginings but know it not. They have taken
idle fancies for their lords and have neglected God, yet understand
not. They have abandoned the most great Ocean and are hastening towards
the pool, but comprehend not. They follow their own idle fancies while
turning aside from God, the Help in Peril, the Self-Subsisting.
-- Bahá'u'lláh, Tablets of Bahá'u'lláh, p. 105-107
8)
22:52. Never did We send a Messenger or a Prophet before thee, but,
when he framed a desire, Satan threw some (vanity) into his desire: but
Allah will cancel anything (vain) that Satan throws in, and Allah will
confirm (and establish) His Signs: for Allah is full of knowledge and
wisdom:
22:53. That He may make the suggestions thrown in by Satan, but a trial
for those in whose hearts is a disease and who are hardened of heart: verily the wrongdoers are in a schism far (from the Truth):
