Conflicting writings about the followers of Moses (political Zionism).
In passage 1.1, the Universal House of Justice says of those who have emigrated to Israel, "people [different sects of Judaism and secular Jews] who have only recently returned, after many centuries of exile, to their homeland [modern-day Israel] bespeaks a token of divine favor of incalculable spiritual and historical importance for the Jewish people". This conflicts with what the Bible (Old and New Testaments), the Quran, the writings of the Bab, the writings of Baha'u'llah, and the writings of Abdu'l-Baha, say about those
who rejected Jesus Christ, a Manifestation of God (as reflected in over twenty different references in passages 2.1 - 7.3). Who are "damned"; who "truly have strayed and are in error"; who are "guilty of folly, denial, blasphemy, and oppression"; whose "Dispensation is superseded and annulled"; who "were heedless [of the Covenant of God]"; whose "works shall in no wise be mentioned before God"; who "were blind to reality"; whose negligence "became
the cause of keeping away a multitude from the heavenly bounties and
from the beneficence of the Holy Spirit for nineteen-hundred [now 2,000] years"; who by rejecting Jesus, Muhammad, The Bab, and Baha'u'llah (rejecting belief in Divine Unity) have "also turned away from the Messengers of the past"; who "know the letter only and they utter the words, as parrots, without understanding their inner meanings"; and so on. In a letter by the Guardian to the U.N., written in 1947, regarding the future of Palestine, he states, "The Bahá’í Faith is entirely non-political and we neither take sides in the present tragic dispute..." In the Most Holy Book (book of Baha'i laws), Baha'u'llah, the Independent Prophet (Most Great Infallibility), says (regarding those who succeed Him), "But he whose words conflict with that which hath been sent down in My Holy Tablets is not of Me." Also, a reference to the "Temple Mount" can be found in the English translation of the Most Holy Book, though it's not part of the Baha'i Holy Writings, like the Aqsa Mosque.
It's also worth noting, not all followers of Judaism support political
Zionism; there are those who condemn it. Passage 1.1 by the House also
has themes found in the commentary on Zionism in passage 1.2. Detailed

Approved by unanimous vote of the Cabinet of the National Unity
Government, the Agreement states as reasons for the Government’s
concurrence in it the "friendly relations between the Bahá’í world community and the State of Israel"
and the "desire of the Government of Israel to give effect to this
relationship, and to its recognition of the special status of the
Bahá’í World Centre." These friendly relations trace their foundation to the inspired initiatives of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá Himself,
particularly during the period following the Revolution of the Young
Turks in 1908 when a general amnesty was effected for religious and
political prisoners held under the old regime...

government, in the person of its Vice-Premier and Foreign Minister, and
the representative of what was justifiably acknowledged as the "world
center of a recognized international non-governmental organization" sat
down together to sign an "International Agreement," the first such
occurrence in the history of the Cause of Bahá’u’lláh.
That this should have taken place in the Holy Land, to which only some
120 years ago the Founder of that Cause was banished as a prisoner,
evokes in us feelings of wonderment and astonished joy. That the
Government which was party to so unprecedented an act happens to be
that of a people who have only recently returned, after many centuries

"A racial identity offered the best hope of inculcating nationalism in
culturally diverse Jewish communities. Only an identity, based on the
myth of a common descent, could unite peoples who were as different
ethnically and culturally as the Jews of Portugal, Britain, Germany,
Greece and Russia. Only the myth of racial unity, only the conviction
that they are a single family, descended from Abraham and Jacob, could
unite orthodox, conservative and reform Jews into a nation. Once the
Jews were convinced of their racial identity, preserved over hundreds
of generations in exile, this would also endow them with pride in their
ancient pedigree and their unique ability to survive and preserve their
racial purity through difficult conditions. This was sure to engender a

To conclude: in the Book of Daniel, from the rebuilding of Jerusalem to
the martyrdom of Christ, seventy weeks are appointed; for by the
martyrdom of Christ the sacrifice is accomplished and the altar
destroyed. This is a prophecy of the manifestation of Christ.

Therefore, in this age of lights, specific teachings have become
universal, in order that the outpouring of the Merciful One environ
both the East and the West, the oneness of the kingdom of humanity
become visible and the luminosity of truth enlighten the world of
consciousness. The
descent of the New Jerusalem is the heavenly religion which secures the
prosperity of the human world and is the effulgence of the illumination
of the realm of God.

2:210. Will they wait until Allah comes to them in canopies of clouds, with angels (in His train) and the question is (thus) settled? But to Allah do all questions go back (for decision).

them. But if anyone, after Allah's favor has come to him, substitutes
(something else), Allah is strict in punishment.
2:212. The life of this world is alluring to those who reject faith,
and they scoff at those who believe. But the righteous will be above
them on the Day of Resurrection; for Allah bestows His abundance
without measures on whom He will.

will make those who follow thee superior to those who reject Faith, to

3:56. "As to those who reject faith, I will punish them with terrible
agony in this world and in the Hereafter, nor will they have anyone to
help.
3:57. "As to those who believe and work righteousness, Allah will pay
them (in full) their reward; but Allah loveth not those who do wrong.
3:58. "This is what We rehearse unto thee of the Signs and the Message of Wisdom."

3:85. If anyone
desires a religion other than Islam (submission to Allah), never will
it be accepted of him; and in the Hereafter he will be in the ranks of
those who have lost (all spiritual good).
3:86. How shall Allah guide those who reject faith after they accepted it and bore witness that the Messenger was true and that clear signs had come unto them? But Allah guides not a people unjust.

That Day [of Resurrection] is indeed an infinitely mighty Day, for in it the Divine Tree proclaimeth from eternity unto eternity, 'Verily, I am God. No God is there but Me'.
Yet those who are veiled believe that He is one like unto them, and
they refuse even to call Him a believer, although such a title in the
realm of His heavenly Kingdom is conferred everlastingly upon the most
insignificant follower of His previous Dispensation.

In like manner, strive thou to comprehend from these lucid, these
powerful, conclusive, and unequivocal statements the meaning of the
"cleaving of the heaven" -- one of the signs that must needs herald the
coming of the last Hour, the Day of Resurrection. As He hath said:
"When the heaven shall be cloven asunder."[1] By "heaven" is meant the
heaven of divine Revelation, which is elevated with every
Manifestation, and rent asunder with every subsequent one. By "cloven asunder" is meant that the former Dispensation is superseded and annulled.
I swear by God! That this heaven being cloven asunder is, to the
discerning, an act mightier than the cleaving of the skies! Ponder a
while. That a divine Revelation which for years hath been securely
established; beneath whose shadow all who have embraced it have been
reared and nurtured; by the light of whose law generations of men have
been disciplined; the excellency of whose word men have heard recounted
by their fathers; in such wise that human eye hath beheld naught but
the pervading influence of its grace, and mortal ear hath heard naught
but the resounding majesty of its command -- what act is mightier than
that such a Revelation should, by the power of God, be "cloven asunder"
and be abolished at the appearance of one soul? Reflect, is this a
mightier act than that which these abject and foolish men have imagined
the "cleaving of the heaven" to mean?

To them that are endowed with understanding, it is clear and manifest
that, when the fire of the love of Jesus consumed the veils of Jewish
limitations, and His authority was made apparent and partially
enforced, He, the Revealer of the unseen Beauty, addressing one day His
disciples, referred unto His passing, and, kindling in their hearts the
fire of bereavement, said unto them: "I go away and come again unto
you." And in another place He said: "I go and another will come, Who
will tell you all that I have not told you, and will fulfil all that I
have said." Both these sayings have but one meaning, were ye to ponder
upon the Manifestations of the Unity of God with Divine insight.

This is what the Spirit (Jesus) prophesied when He came with the truth,
and the Jewish doctors cavilled at Him, until they committed what made
the Holy Spirit to lament, and the eyes of such as enjoy near access to
God to weep.
O CONCOURSE of priests! Leave the bells, and come forth, then, from
your churches. It behoveth you, in this day, to proclaim aloud the Most
Great Name among the nations. Prefer ye to be silent, whilst every
stone and every tree shouteth aloud: 'The Lord is come in His great
glory!' ...He that summoneth men in My name is, verily, of Me, and he
will show forth that which is beyond the power of all that are on
earth... Let the Breeze of God awaken you. Verily, it hath wafted over
the world. Well is it with him that hath discovered the fragrance

XLVII. O Jews! If ye be intent on crucifying once again Jesus, the
Spirit of God, put Me to death, for He hath once more, in My person,
been made manifest unto you. Deal with Me as ye wish, for I have vowed
to lay down My life in the path of God. I will fear no one, though the
powers of earth and heaven be leagued against Me. Followers of the
Gospel! If ye cherish the desire to slay Muhammad, the Apostle of God,
seize Me and put an end to My life, for I am He, and My Self is His

XXXVI. Know thou that when the Son of Man [Jesus]
yielded up His breath to God, the whole creation wept with a great
weeping. By sacrificing Himself, however, a fresh capacity was infused
into all created things. Its evidences, as witnessed in all the peoples
of the earth, are now manifest before thee. The deepest wisdom which
the sages have uttered, the profoundest learning which any mind hath
unfolded, the arts which the ablest hands have produced, the influence
exerted by the most potent of rulers, are but manifestations of the
quickening power released by His transcendent, His all-pervasive, and
resplendent Spirit.
We testify that when He came into the world, He shed the splendor of
His glory upon all created things. Through Him the leper recovered from
the leprosy of perversity and ignorance. Through Him, the unchaste and
wayward were healed. Through His power, born of Almighty God, the eyes
of the blind were opened, and the soul of the sinner sanctified.
Leprosy may be interpreted as any veil that interveneth between man and
the recognition of the Lord, his God. Whoso alloweth himself to be shut
out from Him is indeed a leper, who shall not be remembered in the
Kingdom of God, the Mighty, the All-Praised. We bear witness that
through the power of the Word of God every leper was cleansed, every
sickness was healed, every human infirmity was banished. He it is Who
purified the world. Blessed is the man who, with a face beaming with
light, hath turned towards Him.

Thus have We built the Temple [Baha'u'llah, the Independent Prophet for this Dispensation; in fulfillment of Prophecies in the Dispensation of Moses, Prophecies in the Dispensation of Christ, Prophecies in the Dispensation of Muhammad, and Prophecies in the Dispensation of the Bab] with the hands of power and might, could ye but know it. This is the Temple
promised unto you in the Book. Draw ye nigh unto it. This is that which
profiteth you, could ye but comprehend it. Be fair, O peoples of the
earth! Which is preferable, this, or a temple which is built of clay?
Set your faces towards it. Thus have ye been commanded by God, the Help
in Peril, the Self-Subsisting. Follow ye His bidding, and praise ye
God, your Lord, for that which He hath bestowed upon you. He, verily,
is the Truth. No God is there but He. He revealeth what He pleaseth,
through His words "Be and it is".

Consider those who rejected the Spirit (Jesus) when He came unto them
with manifest dominion. How numerous the Pharisees who had secluded
themselves in synagogues in His name, lamenting over their separation
from Him, and yet when the portals of reunion were flung open and the
divine Luminary shone resplendent from the Dayspring of Beauty, they disbelieved in God, the Exalted, the Mighty.
They failed to attain His presence, notwithstanding that His advent had
been promised them in the Book of Isaiah as well as in the Books of the
Prophets and the Messengers.

Say: O peoples of all faiths! Walk not in the ways of them that followed the Pharisees and thus veiled themselves from the Spirit [Jesus]. They truly have strayed and are in error. in heart behold the Kingdom of God manifest before His Face. Make haste

Say: Fear ye God, then observe equity in
your judgement of this Great Announcement before which, as soon as it
shone forth, every momentous announcement bowed low in adoration. Say:
O concourse of the foolish! If ye reject Him, by what evidence can ye prove your allegiance to the former Messengers of God or vindicate your belief in that which He hath sent down from His mighty and exalted Kingdom?

Say: O ye manifestations [believers]
of My Names! Should ye offer up all that ye possess, nay your very
lives, in the path of God, and invoke Him to the number of the grains
of sand, the drops of rain, and the waves of the sea, and yet oppose the Manifestation of His Cause at the time of His appearance,
your works shall in no wise be mentioned before God. Should ye,
however, neglect all righteous works and yet choose to believe in Him
in these days, God perchance will put away your sins. He, verily, is
the All-Glorious, the Most Bountiful. Thus doth the Lord inform you of
His purpose, that haply ye may not wax proud before the One through
Whom whatsoever hath been revealed from all eternity hath been
confirmed. Happy is he who approacheth this Most Sublime Vision, and
woe to them that turn aside!

In another sense, by these terms is intended the divines of the former Dispensation, who live in the days of the subsequent Revelations,
and who hold the reins of religion in their grasp. If these divines be
illumined by the light of the latter Revelation they will be acceptable
unto God, and will shine with a light everlasting. Otherwise, they will
be declared as darkened, even though to outward seeming they be leaders
of men, inasmuch as belief and unbelief, guidance and error, felicity
and misery, light and darkness, are all dependent upon the sanction of
Him Who is the Day-star of Truth. Whosoever among the divines of every
age receiveth, in the Day of Reckoning, the testimony of faith from the
Source of true knowledge, he verily becometh the recipient of learning,
of divine favour, and of the light of true understanding. Otherwise, he is branded as guilty of folly, denial, blasphemy, and oppression.

IT is recorded in a tradition that of the entire concourse of the
Christians no more than seventy people embraced the Faith of the
Apostle of God [Muhammad].
The blame falleth upon their doctors, for if these had believed, they
would have been followed by the mass of their countrymen. Behold, then,
that which hath come to pass! The learned men of Christendom are held
to be learned by virtue of their safeguarding the teaching of Christ,
and yet consider how they themselves have been the cause of men's
failure to accept the Faith and attain unto salvation! Is it still thy
wish to follow in their footsteps? The followers of Jesus submitted to
their clerics to be saved on the Day of Resurrection,
and as a result of this obedience they eventually entered into the
fire, and on the Day when the Apostle of God appeared they shut
themselves out from the recognition of His exalted Person. Dost thou
desire to follow such divines?

Now that the discourse hath reached this exalted and intractable theme
and touched upon this sublime and impenetrable mystery, know that the
Christian and Jewish peoples have not grasped the intent of the words
of God and the promises He hath made to them in His Book, and have
therefore denied His Cause, turned aside from His Prophets, and
rejected His proofs. Had they but fixed their gaze upon the testimony
of God itself, had they refused to follow in the footsteps of the
abject and foolish among their leaders and divines, they would
doubtless have attained to the repository of guidance and the treasury
of virtue, and quaffed from the crystal waters of life eternal in the
city of the All-Merciful, in the garden of the All-Glorious, and within
the inner reality of His paradise. But as they have refused to see with
the eyes wherewith God hath endowed them, and desired things other than
that which He in His mercy had desired for them, they have strayed far
from the retreats of nearness, have been deprived of the living waters
of reunion and the wellspring of His grace, and have lain as dead
within the shrouds of their own selves.

Among the infidels are those who have repudiated His Self and risen up
against His Cause, and who claim that these divine verses are
contrived. Such also were the objections of the deniers of old, who now
implore deliverance from the Fire.

This fatherhood and sonship are allegorical and symbolical. The
Messianic reality is like unto a mirror through which the sun of
divinity has become resplendent. If this mirror expresses "The light is
in me" - it is sincere in its claim; therefore Jesus was truthful when
he said, "The Father is in me."
The sun in the sky and the sun in the mirror are one, are they not? - and yet we see there are apparently two suns.
The Jews were expecting the coming of the Messiah, lamenting day and night, saying: "O God, send to us our deliverer!" But as they walked in the path of dogmas, rather than reality, when the Messiah appeared they denied him. Had they been investigators of reality, they would not have crucified - but would have recognized him instantly.

The epitome of the discourse is that the Reality of Christ was a clear mirror, and the Sun of Reality -- that is to say, the Essence of Oneness,
with its infinite perfections and attributes -- became visible in the
mirror. The meaning is not that the Sun, which is the Essence of the
Divinity, became divided and multiplied -- for the Sun is one -- but it
appeared in the mirror. This is why Christ said, "The Father is in the
Son," meaning that the Sun is visible and manifest in this mirror.

The obstacle which prevents the so-called religious man from accepting
the teachings of God is literal interpretation. Moses announced the
coming of Christ. The Israelites were awaiting him with the greatest
impatience and anxiety, but when he came they called him Beelzebub.
"The conditions laid down in the Bible for the coming of the expected
one were not fulfilled," they said. They did not understand that the
conditions were symbolical.
For instance, it is written -- "He will come from an unknown place."
Jesus came from Nazareth. "How can this be the Messiah?" they reasoned.
"It is written -- he will carry an iron scepter, that is to say, his
shepherd's staff will be a sword. This man has no sword. It was
prophesised -- he will be seated on the throne of David; behold this
man has not so much as a mat whereon to sit. He was to spread the law
of Moses; this man, on the contrary, seeks to destroy it. How can he be
the promulgator of God's law?" they scornfully laughed.
It was prophesised that the east and west would be united under the
Jewish law; the animals would be at peace one with another; that the
wolf would no longer devour the sheep. They did not see these
conditions fulfilled. Roman tyranny enveloped the world and they
crucified the Christ.
The Jews were blind to reality. The real Christ came from the city of
light in the eternal realms Christ is a king. His shepherd's staff,
that is, his tongue, was a sword dividing the true from the false. The throne of David is not a material throne but an eternal kingdom. Christ
re-established this kingdom; it has been forgotten. Christ conquered
the east and the west. This means a spiritual victory, not a material
one.

His Holiness Moses and the prophets of Israel
announced the advent of the Messiah but expressed it in the language of
symbols. When His Holiness Christ appeared, the Jews rejected Him
although they were expecting His manifestation, and in their temples
and synagogues were crying and lamenting, saying "O God, hasten the
coming of the Messiah!" Why did thy deny Him when He announced Himself?
Because they had followed ancestral forms and interpretations and were
blind to the reality of Christ [i.e. the Manifestation of God]. They
had not perceived the inner significances of the Holy Bible. They
voiced their objections, saying, "We are expecting His Holiness Christ,
but His coming is conditioned upon certain fulfillments and prophetic
announcements. Among the signs of His appearance is one that He shall
come from an unknown place, whereas now this claimant of Messiahship
has come from Nazareth. We home and we are acquainted with his mother.
"Second: One of the signs or messianic conditions is that his scepter
would be an iron rod, and this Christ has not even a wooden staff.
"Third: He was to be seated upon the throne of David whereas this
messianic king is in the utmost state of poverty and has not even a mat.

But as to the Jewish doctors, Christian priests and monks who read those Books, verily, they know the letter only and they utter the words, as parrots, without understanding their inner meanings.
They comprehend them not, because they are engrossed in worldly desires
and lusts and their hearts are attached to mundane allurements. Verily,
are they not heedless of God and understand nothing and find not the
right path?

O thou, the firm one in the Covenant! Give my respectful greeting to
they honored wife and say to her from me: "The Jewish people were
expecting the manifestation of Jesus and were at the same time
attracted to Moses. When His Holiness Christ appeared, they (the Jewish
people) thought that holy personality intended to take away the eternal
honor of Moses. Moses, in the eye of Israel, had no equal. Now, these
had never thought that a greater than him (Moses) would appear. So this
way of thinking became the cause of their being kept away from the
Light of Christ and they were prevented from the precious things of the
Holy Spirit, notwithstanding the fact that the greatest friend of Moses
was Christ and He made His Holiness Moses great in the eye of the world
and made Him to be glorious in the contingent world; whereas, even now,
Israel (that is, the Jews) deny His Holiness, the promised Christ, and
count Him to be an enemy of His Holiness Moses and of Aaron and
David; and they were kept away from the bounties of Christ. They think
that no other great person like Moses could ever come upon the earth
and if such a person should be sent (by God), he must come under the
shadow of His Holiness Moses and promulgate the law of the Torah. This
negligence on the part of the Jews became the cause of keeping away a
multitude from the heavenly bounties and from the beneficence of the
Holy Spirit for nineteen-hundred [now 2,000] years.
"The Sun [Independent Prophet] is ever the same, but the place whence the Sun hath appeared
hath changed. Then, at Christ's time, it appeared in the sign of
Aquarius, but now it hath manifested itself from the sign of Cancer.
These signs are just for an illustration. The sun is the same sun, no
matter from what sign it may manifest itself or from what spot it may
arise. Thou must look at the Sun; do not become veiled by the places
from which the Sun appears."

After the Israelites had advanced along every level of civilization,
and had achieved success in the highest possible degree, they began
little by little to forget the root-principles of the Mosaic Law and
Faith, to busy themselves with rites and ceremonials and to show forth
unbecoming conduct. In the days of Rehoboam, the son of Solomon,
terrible dissension broke out among them; one of their number,
Jeroboam, plotted to get the throne, and it was he who introduced the
worship of idols. The strife between Rehoboam and Jeroboam led to
centuries of warfare between their descendants, with the result that
the tribes of Israel were scattered and disrupted. In brief, it was
because they forgot the meaning of the Law of God that they became
involved in ignorant fanaticism and blameworthy practices such as
insurgence and sedition. Their divines, having concluded that all those
essential qualifications of humankind set forth in the Holy Book were
by then a dead letter, began to think only of furthering their own
selfish interests, and afflicted the people by allowing them to sink
into the lowest depths of heedlessness and ignorance. And the fruit of
their wrong doing was this, that the old-time glory which had endured
so long now changed to degradation, and the rulers of Persia, of
Greece, and of Rome, took them over. The banners of their sovereignty
were reversed; the ignorance, foolishness, abasement and self-love of
their religious leaders and their scholars were brought to light in the
coming of Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, who destroyed them. After a
general massacre, and the sacking and razing of their houses and even
the uprooting of their trees, he took captive whatever remnants his
sword had spared and carried them off to Babylon. Seventy years later
the descendants of these captives were released and went back to
Jerusalem. Then Hezekiah and Ezra reestablished in their midst the
fundamental principles of the Holy Book, and day by day the Israelites
advanced, and the morning-brightness of their earlier ages dawned
again. In a short time, however, great dissensions as to belief and
conduct broke out anew, and again the one concern of the Jewish doctors
became the promotion of their own selfish purposes, and the reforms
that had obtained in Ezra's time were changed to perversity and
corruption.

And it is a basic principle of the Law of God that in every Prophetic Mission, He entereth into a Covenant
with all believers -- a Covenant that endureth until the end of that
Mission, until the promised day when the Personage stipulated at the
outset of the Mission is made manifest. Consider Moses, He Who
conversed with God. Verily, upon Mount Sinai, Moses entered into a
Covenant regarding the Messiah, with all those souls who would live in
the day of the Messiah. And those souls, although they appeared many
centuries after Moses, were nevertheless -- so far as the Covenant,
which is outside time, was concerned -- present there with Moses. The
Jews, however, were heedless of this and remembered it not, and thus
they suffered a great and clear loss.

Ponder that which befell Muhammad, the Seal of the Prophets, may the
life of all else be a sacrifice unto Him. How severe the afflictions
which the leaders of the Jewish people and of the idol-worshipers
caused to rain upon Him, Who is the sovereign Lord of all, in
consequence of His proclamation of the unity of God and of the truth of
His Message! By the righteousness of My Cause! My Pen groaneth, and all
created things weep with a great weeping, as a result of the woes He
suffered at the hands of them that have broken the Covenant of God,
violated His Testament, rejected His proofs, and disputed His signs.

Similarly the Jews were believers in His Holiness Moses, awaiting the
coming of the Messiah. The virtues and perfections of Moses became
apparent in His Holiness Jesus Christ most effulgently but the Jews
held to the name Moses, not adoring the virtues and perfections
manifest in him. Had they been adoring these virtues and seeking these
perfections they would assuredly have believed in His Holiness Jesus
Christ when the same virtues and perfections shone in him.

The Jews were expecting the appearance of the Messiah, looking forward
to it with devotion of heart and soul but because they were submerged
in imitations they did not believe in His Holiness Jesus Christ when he
appeared. Finally they rose against Him even to the extreme of
persecution and shedding His blood. Had they investigated reality they
would have accepted their promised Messiah. These blind imitations and
hereditary prejudices have invariably become the cause of bitterness
and hatred and have filled the world with darkness and violence of war.
Therefore we must seek the fundamental truth in order to extricate
ourselves from such conditions and then with illumined faces find the
pathway to the kingdom of God.

All the peoples of Europe, notwithstanding their vaunted civilization,
sink and drown in this terrifying sea of passion and desire, and this
is why all the phenomena of their culture come to nothing. Let no one
wonder at this statement or deplore it. The primary purpose, the basic
objective, in laying down powerful laws and setting up great principles
and institutions dealing with every aspect of civilization, is human
happiness; and human happiness consists only in drawing closer to the
Threshold of Almighty God, and in securing the peace and well-being of
every individual member, high and low alike, of the human race; and the
supreme agencies for accomplishing these two objectives are the
excellent qualities with which humanity has been endowed.
A superficial culture, unsupported by a cultivated morality, is as "a
confused medley of dreams,"[1] and external lustre without inner
perfection is "like a vapor in the desert which the thirsty dreameth to
be water."[2] For results which would win the good pleasure of God and
secure the peace and well-being of man, could never be fully achieved
in a merely external civilization.

The peoples of Europe have not advanced to the higher planes of moral
civilization, as their opinions and behavior clearly demonstrate.
Notice, for example, how the supreme desire of European governments and
peoples today is to conquer and crush one another, and how, while
harboring the greatest secret repulsion, they spend their time
exchanging expressions of neighborly affection, friendship and harmony.
There is the well-known case of the ruler who is fostering peace and
tranquillity and at the same time devoting more energy than the
warmongers to the accumulation of weapons and the building up of a
larger army, on the grounds that peace and harmony can only be brought
about by force. Peace is the pretext, and night and day they are all
straining every nerve to pile up more weapons of war, and to pay for
this their wretched people must sacrifice most of whatever they are
able to earn by their sweat and toil. How many thousands have given up
their work in useful industries and are laboring day and night to
produce new and deadlier weapons which would spill out the blood of the
race more copiously than before.
Each day they invent a new bomb or explosive and then the governments
must abandon their obsolete arms and begin producing the new, since the
old weapons cannot hold their own against the new. For example at this
writing, in the year 1292 A.H.[1] they have invented a new rifle in
Germany and a bronze cannon in Austria, which have greater firepower
than the Martini-Henry rifle and the Krupp cannon, are more rapid in
their effects and more efficient in annihilating humankind. The
staggering cost of it all must be borne by the hapless masses.

Be just: can this nominal civilization, unsupported by a genuine
civilization of character, bring about the peace and well-being of the
people or win the good pleasure of God? Does it not, rather, connote
the destruction of man's estate and pull down the pillars of happiness
and peace?
