Report: Scientists at center of ‘lab leak’ concerns misled Congress
https://usrtk.org/covid-19-origins/could-criminal-charges-follow-congressional-covid-report/
Published December 2, 2024.
'The report’s findings – the culmination of two years of work by
congressional investigators, the review of more than one million
documents and dozens of transcribed interviews and public hearings —
include evidence that Daszak misled the committee on questions central
to the COVID-19 origins mystery. Daszak exported gain-of-function
coronavirus experiments to China; shirked his duty to probe his Wuhan
colleagues for lab notebooks, viral samples and genomic data; and
helped to falsely persuade millions that the idea of a Wuhan lab leak
was a conspiracy theory, the committee’s investigation shows.'

'A damning new report found that the COVID-19 virus most likely leaked
from a Chinese lab — and that the US bears responsibility for pumping
tens of millions of dollars into high-risk research on extremely
infectious viruses at a facility with weak safety protocols.
The analysis by Alina Chan, a Harvard and MIT molecular biologist, was
published as a guest essay in the New York Times, a publication which
was for a long time skeptical and dismissive of the lab leak theory.'

First People Sickened By COVID-19 Were Chinese Scientists At Wuhan Institute Of Virology, Say US Government Sources

'Hu co-authored multiple papers on coronavirus research, including a 2017 paper on chimeric bat coronaviruses
with Peter Daszak, the head of EcoHealth Alliance, which was funded in
part by the NIH and the USAID Emerging Pandemic Threats PREDICT Program.
Data privately shared with the NIH revealed that these chimeric
SARS-like viruses grew far more quickly and caused more severe disease
in humanized mice in the lab.
When the WIV [Wuhan Institute of Virology] put out their first paper
about the pandemic virus, they failed to point out the novel furin
cleavage site despite having had plans to and allegedly putting such
gain-of-function features into SARS-like viruses in their lab. “It’s as
if these scientists proposed putting horns on horses, but when a unicorn
shows up in their city a year later they write a paper describing every
part of it except its horn,” said Chan.'

Fauci and Daszak appear to be
caught lying to Newt Gingrich in a podcast interview they gave early in the
pandemic, on February 9th 2020. Fauci said, “And like all conspiracy theories, Newt, they’re just conspiracy theories.”, “the things you’re hearing are still in the realm of conspiracy theories without any scientific basis.”
In contrast, later, while giving testimony to the Senate (responding to Rubio) he
said, "I didn't dismiss anything [regarding the possibility of a lab
leak]".
'“There’s a sort of urban legend,” Mr. Gingrich prodded Dr. Fauci,
“that there’s a biological warfare center in Wuhan and that the
coronavirus escaped from that.”
“I’ve heard these conspiracy theories,” Dr. Fauci replied. “And like all conspiracy theories, Newt, they’re just conspiracy theories.” He added that while he could not say that scenario was impossible, “the things you’re hearing are still in the realm of conspiracy theories without any scientific basis.”
Dr. Daszak agreed that “all the evidence says” the virus crossed from animal to human either in a Wuhan market or in rural China, probably after originating in wild bats.
The two men could have told Mr. Gingrich a lot more.'

Why the Chair of the Lancet’s COVID-19 Commission Thinks The US Government Is Preventing a Real Investigation Into the Pandemic
https://www.jeffsachs.org/interviewsandmedia/64rtmykxdl56ehbjwy37m5hfahwnm5
An interview of Jeffrey D. Sachs by Nathan Robinson
Current Affairs, Published August 2, 2022
‘ROBINSON:
A shocking thing to me was that the head of the EcoHealth Alliance was
on the World Health Organization team that actually investigated the
origins of COVID and concluded that it wasn’t the lab.
SACHS:
Well, more than that: I appointed him—this was Peter Daszak—I appointed
him to chair the task force of the pandemic commission that I was
running for the Lancet. And he headed a task force on the origins. I
thought, naively at the beginning, “Well, here’s a guy who is so
connected, he would know.” And then I realized he was not telling me
the truth. And it took me some months, but the more I saw it, the more
I resented it.
And so I told him,
“Look, you have to leave.” And then the other scientists in that task
force attacked me for being anti-scientific. And I asked them: “What
are your connections with all of this?” They didn’t tell me. Then when
the Freedom of Information Act released some of these documents that
NIH had been hiding from the public, I saw that people that were
attacking me were also part of this thing. So I disbanded that whole
task force. So my own experience was to witness close up how
they’re not talking. And they’re trying to keep our eyes on something
else. And away from even asking the questions that we’re talking about.
We don’t have the answers. But we have good reasons to ask. And we have
good reasons to know that NIH is not doing its job properly right now.’

In the US, where over 1.1 million people have died from Covid-19, early in the pandemic, the public were advised not
to wear masks, as indicated in the article below. However, even if
surgical or N95 masks were not readily available, Fauci could have
advised people to wear home-made masks, which would have still made a
big difference in limiting the spread of the virus, at a time when
cases were likely increasing exponentially, and would have saved many
lives and saved many from serious illness. The head of China's CDC says
the decision not to require masks in the US was "a big mistake".

'Medical masks and cloth face coverings are now a common sight when
venturing out in public amidst the coronavirus pandemic; most states
require them as part of reopening plans, and the U.S. Centers for

This wasn’t always the case. When the coronavirus pandemic hit
stateside, face masks were strictly recommended as personal protective
equipment (PPE) for health care professionals. According to Anthony
Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease expert and a key member
of the White House coronavirus task force, masks weren’t advised to the
public from the start because of the anticipated PPE shortages.'

Second, on February 20, 2020, Dr. Andersen-in trying to defend the viability of Proximal Origin-wrote, "Unfortunately
none of this helps refute a lab origin and the possibility must be
considered as a serious scientific theory (which is what we do) and not
dismissed out of hand as another 'conspiracy' theory. We all really,
really wish that we could do that (that's how this got started), but
unfortunately its just not possible given the data."81'

The Lab-Leak Theory Is Looking Stronger by the Day. Here’s What We Know.

Katherine Eban
Published May 6th, 2022
‘And you can tell from the emails that follow this call, one of the
scientists, Mike Farazan, who’s from the Scripps Research Institute
sent an email to Tony Fauci, Francis Collins, then-head of NIH, and
Lawrence Tabak, also of NIH, kind of summarizing the concerns of the
scientists and it’s really compelling and you can tell that they’re all
quite concerned.
So according to a written summary of some of what the scientists were
thinking, this is a really interesting thing that is attributed to Bob
Garry who’s a virologist at the Tulane School of Medicine. And this is
a quote from that summary:
“I lined n-CoV” — so, the new coronavirus — “with the 96 percent bat Coronavirus, sequenced at the WIV [Wuhan Institute of Virology]. Except for the RBD” — and that means receptor-binding domain — “the
S proteins are essentially identical at the amino-acid level, while all
but the perfect insertion of 12 nucleotides, that adds the furin site,
as to is over its whole length, essentially identical. I really
can’t think of a plausible natural scenario where you get from the bat
virus or one very similar to it to [SARS-CoV-2] where you insert
exactly 4 amino acids 12 nucleotide[s] that all have to be added at the
exact same time to gain this function…. I just can’t figure out how this gets accomplished in nature.”
RG: And there are a number of other scientists saying very similar
things on that call, according to the summary, right? You have this
conference call where you have all of these different scientists saying
— some of them are putting percentages, 70/30 lab, 60/40 lab, and then
just a couple days later, you have kind of an organized paper with some
of these same scientists saying that actually, the lab leak is just a
giant conspiracy.’
...
'KE: Yeah. So Jesse
Bloom was tracking some of the early SARS-CoV-2 sequences from China,
and he began sort of doing detective work and realizing that some of
the sequences that were published in Chinese journals seem to have
disappeared from the NIH database of sequences, which struck him as
odd. And he was basically able to figure out that the NIH deleted the
sequences at the request of these Wuhan researchers.
So he wrote a pretty unusual paper about that. And he sends the
preprint, before it appears publicly, to Fauci and Collins; they
immediately turn on a dime and organize this conference call, this Zoom
call. Kristian Andersen and Robert Garry come on. Collins invites them
and asks Bloom: Who should we invite? And so he, Rasmus Nielsen, and
Sergei Pond, two scientists get on the call. And almost immediately, it
just devolves into this furious set of accusations with Anderson
accusing Bloom of bringing scrutiny to this that will lead to more
harassment of scientists. And then Anderson proposes something that
just stuns Bloom.
He says: Look, the preprint is not public yet. So I can go in there and
basically with no fingerprints, I can either revise it, or delete it.
And Bloom is aghast, and he says: I don’t think that that is
appropriate, given the circumstances. And, Fauci and Collins, reading
the room are like: Yeah, that’s maybe not a great idea.'

‘When they sat down with the scientists at the WIV, the American
diplomats were shocked by what they heard. The Chinese researchers told
them they didn’t have enough properly trained technicians to safely
operate their BSL-4 lab. The Wuhan scientists were asking for more
support to get the lab up to top standards.
The diplomats wrote
two cables to Washington reporting on their visits to the Wuhan lab.
More should be done to help the lab meet top safety standards, they
said, and they urged Washington to get on it. They also warned that the
WIV researchers had found new bat coronaviruses could easily infect
human cells, and which used the same cellular route that had been used
by the original SARS coronavirus.
Taken together,
those two points—a particularly dangerous groups of viruses being
studied in a lab with real safety problems—were intended as a warning
about a potential public-health crisis, one of the cable writers told
me. They kept the cables unclassified because they wanted more
people back home to be able to read and share them, according to the
cable writer. But there was no response from State Department
headquarters and they were never made public. And as U.S.-China
tensions rose over the course of 2018, American diplomats lost access
to labs such as the one at the WIV.
“The cable was a warning shot,” one U.S. official said. “They were
begging people to pay attention to what was going on.” The world would
be paying attention soon enough—but by then, it would be too late.’

‘At the same time, the US instituted a pause on all research that could
“confer attributes to influenza, MERS, or SARS viruses such that the
virus would have enhanced pathogenicity and/or transmissibility in
mammals.” That was a good step. (Covid-19, which didn’t exist at that
time, is in the SARS family of viruses.)
In early 2017, after all the noise and protests died down, NIH quietly
lifted the pause, allowing the research to resume again. Many
scientists objected again, including me. I wrote that “engineering the flu to be more virulent is a terrible idea.... this
research is so potentially harmful, and offers such little benefit to
society, that I fear that NIH is endangering the trust that Congress
places in it.”
This time, though,
the NIH dismissed the concerns of scientists like me (and everyone in

careful.” (I also got the sense that NIH didn’t like having
outside scientists second-guessing their decisions, but maybe that’s
just me.)’

David Relman, a Stanford University microbiologist and emerging
infectious diseases expert for the National Academies, said conflicts
of interest are especially troublesome when writing on high profile
issues.
“For any major,
controversial issue, I believe that all of us have an even greater
responsibility to reveal those conflicts upfront—and let others have an
opportunity to judge what effect those conflicts might have had,” said
Relman.
Relman also called
into question the logic of the paper’s premise. The Wuhan Institute of
Virology may have simply been experimenting with unfamiliar viruses.
The disappearance of the lab’s coronavirus sequence database in 2019
and the lab’s history of gain-of-function experiments also weaken the
claims of Lipkin and his coauthors, Relman said.
“The Proximal

its conclusions. I was very surprised that it passed review at Nature

‘4. The US role in funding the Wuhan Institute of
Virology.[2] From June 2014 to May 2019, Daszak’s EcoHealth Alliance
had a grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious
Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, to do
gain-of-function research with coronaviruses at the Wuhan Institute of
Virology. Whether
or not SARS2 is the product of that research, it seems a questionable
policy to farm out high-risk research to foreign labs using minimal
safety precautions. And if the SARS2 virus did indeed escape from the
Wuhan institute, then the NIH will find itself in the terrible position
of having funded a disastrous experiment that led to the death of more
than 3 million worldwide, including more than half a million of its own
citizens.
The responsibility of the NIAID and NIH is even more acute because for
the first three years of the grant to EcoHealth Alliance there was a
moratorium on funding gain-of-function research. When the
moratorium expired in 2017, it didn’t just vanish but was replaced by a
reporting system, the Potential Pandemic Pathogens Control and
Oversight (P3CO) Framework, which required agencies to report for
review any dangerous gain-of-function work they wished to fund.
The moratorium, referred to officially as a “pause,” specifically
barred funding any gain-of-function research that increased the
pathogenicity of the flu, MERS or SARS viruses. It defined
gain-of-function very simply and broadly as “research that improves the
ability of a pathogen to cause disease.”
But then a footnote on p.2 of the moratorium document states that “[a]n
exception from the research pause may be obtained if the head of the
USG funding agency determines that the research is urgently necessary
to protect the public health or national security.”
This seemed to mean that either the director of the NIAID, Anthony
Fauci, or the director of the NIH, Francis Collins, or maybe both,
would have invoked the exemption in order to keep the money
flowing to Shi’s gain-of-function research, and later to avoid
notifying the federal reporting system of her research.
“Unfortunately, the NIAID Director and the NIH Director exploited this
loophole to issue exemptions to projects subject to the Pause
–preposterously asserting the exempted research was ‘urgently necessary
to protect public health or national security’—thereby nullifying the
Pause,” Dr. Richard Ebright said in an interview with Independent
