Some references on the term 'heretic' from the Baha'i writings.
1)
In the "Avalim," an authoritative and well-known book, it is recorded:
"A Youth from Bani-Hashim shall be made manifest, Who will reveal a new
Book and promulgate a new law;" then follow these words: "Most of His
enemies will be the divines." In another passage, it is related of
Sadiq, son of Muhammad, that he spoke the following: "There shall
appear a Youth from Bani-Hashim, Who will bid the people plight fealty
unto Him. His Book will be a new Book, unto which He shall summon the
people to pledge their faith. Stern is His Revelation unto the Arab. If
ye hear about Him, hasten unto Him." How well have they followed the
directions of the Imams of the Faith and Lamps of certitude! Although
it is clearly stated: "Were ye to hear that a Youth from Bani-Hashim
hath appeared, summoning the people unto a new and Divine Book, and to
new and Divine laws, hasten unto Him," yet have they all declared that
Lord of being an infidel, and pronounced Him a heretic. They hastened
not unto that Hashimite Light, that divine Manifestation, except with
drawn swords, and hearts filled with malice. Moreover, observe how
explicitly the enmity of the divines hath been mentioned in the
books. Notwithstanding all these evident and significant traditions,
all these unmistakable and undisputed allusions, the people have
rejected the immaculate Essence of knowledge and of holy utterance, and
have turned unto the exponents of rebellion and error. Despite these
recorded traditions and revealed utterances, they speak only that which
is prompted by their own selfish desires. And should the Essence of
Truth reveal that which is contrary to their inclinations and desires,
they will straightway denounce Him as an infidel, and will protest
saying: "This is contrary to the sayings of the Imams of the Faith and
of the resplendent lights. No such thing hath been provided by our
inviolable Law." Even so in this day such worthless statements have
been and are being made by these poor mortals.

178. Call ye to mind the shaykh whose name was Muhammad-Hasan # 166.
Shaykh Muhammad-Hasan, one of the leading exponents of Shi'ih Islam,
rejected the Báb. The author of voluminous writings on Shi'ih
jurisprudence, he is reported to have died around 1850. Nabil, in The
Dawn-Breakers, describes the encounter that took place in Najaf between
Mulla Aliy-i-Bastami, one of the Letters of the Living, and Shaykh
Muhammad-Hasan. During the meeting, Mulla Ali announced the
manifestation of the Báb and extolled the potency of His Revelation. At
the instigation of the shaykh, Mulla Ali was forthwith pronounced a
heretic and expelled from the assembly. He was put on trial,
transported to Istanbul, and condemned to hard labour.

This episode marks the first affliction which befell a disciple of the
Báb after the declaration of His mission. Mulla Ali realised from this
experience how steep and thorny was the path leading to his eventual
attainment of the promise given him by his Master. Wholly resigned to
His will, and prepared to shed his life-blood for His Cause, he resumed
his journey until he arrived at Najaf. In the presence of Shaykh
Muhammad-Hasan, one of the most celebrated ecclesiastics of shi'ah
Islam, and in the face of a distinguished company of his disciples,
Mulla Ali announced fearlessly the manifestation of the Báb, the Gate
whose advent they were eagerly awaiting. "His proof," he declared, "is
His Word; His testimony, none other than the testimony with which Islam
seeks to vindicate its truth. From the pen of this unschooled Hashimite
Youth of Persia there have streamed, within the space of forty-eight
hours, as great a number of verses, of prayers, of homilies, and
scientific treatises, as would equal in volume the whole of the Qur'án,
which it took Muhammad, the Prophet of God, twenty-three years to
reveal!" That proud and fanatic leader, instead of welcoming, in an age
of darkness and prejudice, these life-giving evidences of a new-born
Revelation, forthwith pronounced Mulla Ali a heretic and expelled him
from the assembly. His disciples and followers, even the Shaykhis, who
already testified to Mulla Ali's piety, sincerity, and learning,
endorsed, unhesitatingly, the judgment against him. The disciples of
Shaykh Muhammad-Hasan, joining hands with their adversaries, heaped
upon him untold indignities. They eventually delivered him, his hands
bound in chains, to an official of the Ottoman government, arraigning
him as a wrecker of Islam, a calumniator of the Prophet, an instigator
of mischief, a disgrace to the Faith, and worthy of the penalty of
death. He was taken to Baghdad under the escort of government
officials, and was cast into prison by the governor of that city.

3)
From the beginning the followers of all religions have believed in two
seas, -- one salt and one fresh; in two trees -- the tree of good and
the tree of evil. For this men have called one another heretics.
Misinterpreting the divine commands, men have acquired prejudices and
on these prejudices they have waged religious wars and caused
bloodshed. Behold what is happening to-day! Men are killing their
brothers, believing this to be the cause of salvation, believing that
such work is approved by God, believing that those whom they kill will
be sent to hell.
BAHA'O'LLAH speaks to humanity in a different tone, declaring humanity
to be like the leaves of a single branch, the branches of a single
trunk.
For the new day hath dawned -- awaken the sleeping ones! Thanks be to
God, you are the beloved of the universe that love the whole world.
Praise be to God your affection is for all, you are the enemies of
none, lovers of humanity, a precious mine for the souls.
Thus will you disperse the heavy clouds of prejudice. The doors of the
kingdom are open to you, the divine good news of the ages has come to
you. Go further into the teachings and you will arrive at the splendors
of divine mysteries.
-- Abdu'l-Baha, Divine Philosophy, p. 100
4)
The purpose of this is to show that the holy Manifestations of God, the
divine prophets, are the first teachers of the human race. They are
universal educators and the fundamental principles they have laid down
are the Causes and factors of the advancement of nations. Forms and
imitations which creep in afterward are not conducive to that progress.
On the contrary these are destroyers of human foundations established
by the heavenly educators. These are clouds which obscure the Sun of
Reality. If you reflect upon the essential teachings of Jesus you will
realize that they are the light of the world. Nobody can question their
truth. They are the very source of life and the cause of happiness to
the human race. The forms and superstitions which appeared and obscured
the light did not affect the reality of Christ. For example, His
Holiness Jesus Christ said: "Put up the sword into the sheath." The
meaning is that warfare is forbidden and abrogated; but consider the
Christian wars which took place afterward. Christian hostility and
inquisition spared not even the learned; he who proclaimed the
revolution of the earth was imprisoned; he who announced the new
astronomical system was persecuted as a heretic; scholars and
scientists became objects of fanatical hatred and many were killed and
tortured. How do these actions conform with the teachings of Jesus
Christ and what relation do they bear to his own example? For Christ
declared: "Love your enemies, and pray for them that persecute you that
you may be sons of your Father which is in Heaven; for He maketh His
sun to rise on the evil and 251 the good, and sendeth rain
on the just and the unjust." How can hatred, hostility and persecution
be reconciled with Christ and His teachings?
